A LAW SUIT was filed (Friday 8/29) to block this action. We will keep our website up to date on this and horse rescues/santuaries/slaughter, environmental & political issues.
It appears that the BLM was trying to do as much irrevocable damage to America's wild horses as possible before congress can act.
contact information, remember the fax #'s and emails work 24/7....
These horses have a genetic map that makes them special. They are a natural treasure, and should be preserved/protected.
Do we need more cost draining land lessees for cattle ranching? Do we want protection of our diminishing wild lands?
(It took me 15 min. to contact these agencies by fax and email....it is a small investment of time, for a major gain.)
1. Call/write/fax President Obama this herd is a national treasure and should not be wiped out by a government agency. Please flood the phone lines with calls! Phone: 202-456-1111 or 202-456-9000 Fax: 202-456-2461
send the President an email - go to www.whitehouse.gov and select contact
2. Ask Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar to stop this round up
Call: 202-208-3100
Write: feedback@ios.doi.gov
3. BLM Director Bob Abbey, tell him to halt this round up-- he must reconsider his agency's actions
The BLM current have over 30,00 formerly wild mustangs in holding pens which they have yet to adopt out, costing taxpayers over $1 million a year. And as a BLM representative told me this weekend they do not check who adopts these horses and they know many of them are adopted by people who sell them to slaughter houses.

Fax: 202-208-5242

4. Depending on what happens, tomorrow: Call and write your own Senators and Congress people- tell them that the BLM is allowing the destruction of Cloud’s unique and historical wild horse herd. Express your outrage and ask them to help stop this round up. (if you are new to political action, two sentences will do, letter head is great!)
--
thank you for your efforts to preserve one of our national treasures.
Remember a 2-3 line letter, email, fax, phone message is sufficient. I am including the following portion of a letter by Scout Tomyris, because she makes some solid points that may help clarify some issues.
Dear Mr Abbey,
It is my understanding that The BLM currently keeps over 3000 formerly wild mustangs in holding pens which you have yet to adopt out, costing taxpayers over $1 million a year. I have also heard that the BLM does not check who adopts these horses and is aware that many of them are adopted by people who sell them to slaughter houses. (outlawed in all states, except 2, which in the western US, means the horrors of Mexican slaughter which has no laws, no controls, and is more horrendous than one can imagine.)**
On top of this, now I hear that the BLM is currently rounding up many more wild horses in Nevada. What I heard is that the BLM is intending to round up and eliminate 12 herds (650 horses) off 1.4 million acres and that next you plan to destroy Cloud's herd with a massive removal of 70 horses from that one herd.
Many of the horses that I have come to love in the Cloud shows on PBS, will lose their families and their freedom. Cloud is part of The Pryor Mountain wild horses. These horses are descendants of horses used during the Lewis and Clark expedition. (Taken and used by the by the Crow Indians.)**The horses have been living free and wild in the Pryor Mountains since the early 1800's.
By zeroing out whole herds and reducing others to below genetic viability, the BLM is circumventing the will of Congress. The House just passed the Restoring of American Mustangs (ROAM) act and the Senate will review this bill (now S.1579) when they return from recess in September.
Removing 70 horses from the Pryor Mountain group will destroy this unique small herd, leaving them well below the bare minimum for genetic viability. The range is in great condition and the horses are healthy.
So my question is WHY? This does not make sense to me. That the BLM would even consider this, much less manifest it, makes me sick. I am an official BLM volunteer but I do not wish to be associated with any unnecessary culling of wild horses. You are supposed to be protecting them!
It is therefore incumbent upon me to protest. I respectfully request that you stop the round up and return this proposal for more extensive public review. It is particularly upsetting to me that the BLM is acting on this despite the fact that there is significant opposition from the American public.
Please know that I am sending a copy of this letter to my Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Fienstein, my Representative Lynn Woolsey, the Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and to President Obama in addition to posting it to the internet.
Sincerely,
Scout Tomyris
